What: La Liga, Jornada 3
When: 10 sept, 8:00 PM CET
Where: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

The players walk on to the pitch with the Real Madrid hymn playing across the stadium and confetti raining down on them. As the game nears kick-off the commentator begins, “Welcome to this disagreement between neighbors…” and you know how the rest goes when you play PES 2011. The statement to be pondered upon is this curious “disagreement between neighbours”. A Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid match is called El Derbi Madrileno (THE Madrid Derby) for the simple reason that it is the true disagreement between neighbors. A Real Madrid v Getafe, for all appearance sakes, is hardly so. Nevertheless, there are strong undercurrents running through the rival sects of fans for wholly different reasons.

Ask a Madridista what he expects from a Real Madrid v Getafe match these days and he’ll quickly rattle of the names of the Getafe players that he wants to see do well. And why is that so, you may ask. Jordi Codina, Pedro Mosquera, Miguel Torres and in the recent past, Ruben De La Red, Esteban Granero,  Dani Parejo & Roberto Soldado…players from La Fabrica, who were either deemed “not good enough to play for Real Madrid” or were farmed out to see if they can cut it at Getafe before they succumb to the pressure at the cauldron that is the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Some of them showed the fickle bosses at Madrid what they were made of, others were let go either through folly, erratic coaching decisions or simply because they were not good enough. Some of them still play in Madrid, but not at Real Madrid.

Getafe CF S.A.D. is currently Madrid’s third largest club and often serves as a satellite club for Real Madrid youth who do spells at the club under loan or with a buyback clause. Depending upon the situation, a player who was once part of Real Madrid plays this match with the hope that the mister sees something worthwhile on displays and calls him back or just to hand out the footballing equivalent of “You should not have let me go” by scoring a goal against his former club. Either ways, you more often than not, see a Getafe team punch above their belts and give a sumptuous performance against Real Madrid. The fact that Dani Parejo (now at Valencia) as a Getafe player, has scored 3 goals in his 3 games against Real Madrid only serves to prove this fact. So without much ado let’s take a quick look at the head to head record between Real Madrid & Getafe.

Head to Head

Head to Head, Real Madrid clearly have the upper hand losing just once to Getafe in the last six games, the loss being two years ago, in 2008. Despite the number of wins, a quick look at the score line and the score times suggests that this match always threatens to be a goal fest and with unexpected twists; the perfect recipe for an entertainer.

Team News

Real Madrid CF

Mourinho has relatively the full squad at his disposal. Players are back from their international break without any lasting injuries and the team which demolished Zaragoza a couple of weeks ago might be set to start once more.

Despite the fracas with the Portuguese NT, Pepe and Carvalho look set to start as the Center Back pairing, thanks in part to Cris who played the peacemaker between the two Portuguese defenders as can be seen in the video below.  .

Cristiano will undoubtedly look to set the pace in the Pichichi race and given his mind boggling scoring tally against Getafe, it won’t be surprising if he grabs a brace.

Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop continue to be unavailable due to long term injuries and won’t be missed seeing as they haven’t played at all with the club in the pre-season and would most likely serve as Mourinho’s “winter signings”. Khedira is suffering from back pain and looks to miss the match along

Getafe CF S.A.D.

Curiously enough, Real Madrid’s most promising Canterano, Pablo Sarabia, now playing at Getafe with a buyback clause, stands a chance to start his first ever match in the Primera at the Santiago Bernabeu. Madridistas worldwide will no doubt be cheering for him to showcase his talent and give Mourinho more selection headaches next season.

Meanwhile, Getafe coach Luis Garcia has had a tough opening La Liga opening fixture when Getafe played hosted his former club Levante UD. Garcia’s work in helping Levante’s players and fans bond together as a closely knit family is part of storied folklore and which in part, saw Getafe hire him. Unsurprisingly, Getafe dropped two points against Levante, with Miku scoring a finely crafted goal after some neat interplay with Pablo Sarabia and Mehdi Lacen. Miku, alongwith Sarabia remains the most dangerous threat to Real Madrid and will look to further his tally if he can grab a goal on a swift counter attack.

Garcia has some selection headaches as defenders Alberto Lopo & Rafael Lopez both look set to miss the match with injuries and Albertazzi also looks doubtful to make the team sheet. Garcia will also be without the services of Pedro Leon who is on loan from Real Madrid due to the clause the club never forgets to insert in their loaned players’ contracts after what Morientes did in 2003 (while on loan with Monaco).

Expected Line-ups

Real Madrid

Formation – 4-2-3-1

Starting XI – Casillas, Ramos, Pepe, Carvalho, Alonso, Coentrao, Ronaldo, Ozil, Kaka, Benzema

Getafe

Formation – 4-2-3-1

Starting XI – Moya, M. Torres, Daniel Diaz, Alex Perez, Mane, Medhi Lacen, Barrada, Pedro Rios, Sarabia, Casquero, Miku

Prediction

This will be Luis Garcia’s second official game in charge of Getafe, and it seems Real Madrid will have an easy ride. Given the “ex-player curse”, I believe Getafe will snatch a goal on the break, but will otherwise be comprehensively outplayed. 4-1 for Real Madrid!
