Iker Casillas – 12 years, Always the Number One

Way back in 1999, Iker Casillas (San Iker as we call him affectionately) debuted for the senior side against Athletic Bilbao at age 17 which by his own admission, is his happiest footballing memory. Few of us remember that back then, to ease the pressure on the scrawny 17 year old kid, the then Real Madrid Captain and now General Director at Malaga CF, Fernando Hierro served the goal kicks for Casillas.

A year later, Iker Casillas became the youngest ever goal keeper to play in a Champions League final when he came off the bench to replace the injured Cesar. A tumultous 15 minutes before the game ended, the world saw a 18 year old make saves after saves against Germany’s best as he kept his side in the game and consequently helped his side win the 9th Champions League trophy (THAT goal from Zidane obviously not forgotten). Most of those who watched the match back then knew rightaway that this lithe goalkeeper would be yet another product from La Fabrica who would go on to write his name into the annals of Real Madrid legends.

Twelve years down the line, today, Iker Casillas is Real Madrid’s number one. He is Spain’s number one. He is the world’s number one goal keeper. From us the fans, your Twelfth Man, Here’s wishing you a Happy Twelfth San Iker.

In this footballing world where loyalty is often fickle, Casillas stands as an epitome of loyalty, a person who knew 15 years ago that he would be a Madridista to death (look at the video below).

We, the fans, hope that you regale us with similar heroics that we’ve been accustomed to over the years and may you serve Real Madrid for eternity.

Before we leave you, here’s a look at all the different Iker Casillas avatars over the years.

Hala Madrid!
